Asbestos disposal across Sydney: four councils, four different answers

There is no single Sydney rule for where asbestos goes. Blue Mountains City Council takes bonded sheet asbestos at Blaxland by appointment for A$546 a tonne up to 250 kg; the City of Sydney runs no facility licensed to accept it; Canterbury-Bankstown's Clean-Up will not collect it; Northern Beaches points to Kimbriki. The state list, by suburb
The NSW EPA's list of facilities that accept household asbestos names seven under Sydney metro: Kemps Creek, Blaxland, Eastern Creek, Horsley Park, Terrey Hills, Lucas Heights and Wetherill Park. The EPA says it does not endorse any of them or guarantee they will accept asbestos in every case, and to phone before you visit.
Blue Mountains: by appointment, with a fee
Blue Mountains City Council says non-friable asbestos is accepted at Blaxland by appointment only, booked at least 24 hours ahead, from 9am to 2:30pm on weekdays. Its 2026/27 schedule charges A$546 a tonne for bonded sheet asbestos up to 250 kg, with a A$55 minimum, and A$595 a tonne above that, levy and GST as applicable.
It does not take friable asbestos, a sheet larger than 2.4 m by 1.6 m, or waste generated outside its own area, and Katoomba takes no asbestos at all.
City of Sydney and Canterbury-Bankstown: what they will not do
The City of Sydney says it operates no waste facility licensed to accept asbestos, so it must go to a certified facility. Canterbury-Bankstown's household Clean-Up will not collect asbestos.
Northern Beaches: a council-owned facility with conditions
Northern Beaches Council says it has a licensed disposal facility at Kimbriki, owned by Northern Beaches Council (96%) and Mosman Council (4%), and its guide says asbestos is accepted there but conditions apply. This site read no Kimbriki fee.
What could change
Blaxland's fees are set for the financial year and reviewed each year, and every council and the EPA can change a page at any time. A free household collection trial is planned for 2027 and is not running; check the current page before you rely on any of this.
