What asbestos disposal in Sydney actually involves

City of Sydney. The City operates no waste facility licensed to accept asbestos; it must go to a certified waste facility. Report dumped asbestos on 02 9265 9333, a line open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Canterbury-Bankstown. Council's household bulky-waste Clean-Up will not collect asbestos.

Northern Beaches. Council says it has a licensed disposal facility on the Northern Beaches, the Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre, owned by Northern Beaches Council (96%) and Mosman Council (4%), the same facility the EPA lists at Terrey Hills, though conditions apply. Report dumping 24/7 on 1300 434 434.

Blue Mountains. Council's Blaxland facility takes non-friable (sheet) asbestos by appointment only, booked at least 24 hours ahead, from 9am to 2:30pm Monday to Friday, never on weekends or public holidays. It does not take friable asbestos or any sheet larger than 2.4 m by 1.6 m, Katoomba takes no asbestos at all, and Council does not accept waste generated outside the City of Blue Mountains.

Packing it for the trip, and what it costs at Blaxland

Blue Mountains asks for sheet asbestos to be wetted down, wrapped in builders plastic and secured with strong tape, never tipped from the back of a vehicle, and a late arrival needs rebooking. Its 2026/27 charge is A$546 a tonne for up to 250 kg (A$55 minimum) and A$595 a tonne for more than 250 kg, both including the NSW waste levy and GST, as applicable. Elsewhere the NSW rules apply: non-friable asbestos must be securely packaged, and asbestos waste may only go to a landfill licensed to accept it.

Never in a bin

Asbestos must never go in a kerbside bin, or in an uncovered or unapproved skip bin.

If you carry more than 100 kg or 10 m² of asbestos waste from your home yourself, you report the load to the EPA on its household asbestos form within 24 hours of delivering it; if a licensed contractor carries it, the contractor reports it instead. You stay responsible for your asbestos waste being disposed of lawfully even when you pay someone to take it away, so get a copy of the disposal receipt. The EPA's fines for the wrong handling of asbestos waste run up to $7,500 for an individual and $15,000 for a company, and up to $1,000,000 if the matter reaches court. A free collection trial is planned, not running: the NSW Government plans a two-year trial of free pick-up and disposal for smaller amounts of household asbestos, expected to start in 2027, and is not yet taking expressions of interest.
