Asbestos Roof and Sheet Removal in Sydney

Fibro sheeting, corrugated cement roofing, old eaves and fences are what bonded asbestos looks like in most Sydney homes. Over 10 square metres, it must be removed by someone SafeWork NSW has licensed. The NSW Government puts 10 m² at about a 5 m by 2 m wall, or the wall sheeting from one small bathroom.

What asbestos roof and sheet removal in Sydney actually involves

It is legal for a homeowner to remove less than 10 m² of bonded asbestos themselves, or to have a tradesperson do it. The NSW Government still strongly recommends a licensed removalist, because there is no safe level of exposure. At the instrument, the WHS Regulation 2025 writes the same area line for a business's own removal work: over 10 m² needs a licence; 10 m² or less is exempt. If you are close to the line, treat the job as licensed work: the government pages say less than 10 m² and more than 10 m², and nothing separate about exactly 10 m².

Roofs, water and packing

High-pressure water spray and compressed air must never be used on asbestos. Removal uses a wet spray method, and even then the fibres are only suppressed, so respiratory protection stays essential. Sheets come down whole and wet where they can, and non-friable asbestos must be securely packaged before it travels. Sydney councils each give their own year line for older homes, and each stays that council's own: Inner West says the mid 1980s and Northern Beaches says before 1987. The NSW Government's, used on other pages, is 1990.
